Ampthill & Maulden Circular Walk
Introduction
This walk takes you through the woods and gently rolling landscape of some of Bedfordshire's loveliest countryside. Discover the Greensand Ridge with its glorious views, or follow in the footsteps of John Bunyan and visit the romantic ruins of Houghton House. The walk also offers opportunities to explore the picturesque Georgian market town of Ampthill and the village of Maulden
Houghton House is situated just outside Ampthill off the B530 Bedford - Ampthill road. To reach the car park follow the concrete track signposted Houghton House. There is also a car park in Ampthill Park, from where the walk can be reached by following the Greensand Ridge Walk signs through the park.
Before You Start
Waymarking - Look out for the circular route waymarks, which indicate the direction of the walk. Yellow arrows are used on public footpaths, blue on public bridleways. (Short cuts are waymarked with blue and yellow waymark discs, without the 'CR' lettering.) Parts of the circular route follow the Greensand Ridge Walk, which is waymarked with special signs, posts and discs, some bearing a muntjac deer symbol.
Footwear - Some of the paths can become wet and muddy, particularly after heavy rain, so strong, waterproof footwear is recommended.
The Starting Point -
The walk is described in a clockwise direction from the car park near Houghton House. However, you can begin at any other point and walk in either direction.
